The Philadelphia Eagles have cut, traded or not re-signed nine players in recent weeks. It looks like another former starter may be traded.
The blog EaglesBlitz says linebacker/defensive end Chris Gocong could be traded to the Cleveland Browns for a draft pick.
Teams don’t publicly discuss trades but this rumor would make a lot of sense.
Gocong fell out of favor last year with the Eagles and lost his staring job to Moise Fokou.
New Browns general manager Tom Heckert drafted Gocong for the Eagles in 2006, stealing Gocong from the New York Jets (and then coach Eric Mangini).
If you are keeping score at home, the Eagles have released Darren Howard, Kevin Curtis, Brian Westbrook, Shawn Andrews and Will Witherspoon. They traded Chris Clemons and Reggie Brown, and didn’t re-sign Sean Jones and Jason Babin.
The team signed Marlin Jackson and Hank Baskett from the Indianapolis Colts, and acquired defensive end Darryl Tapp from Seattle. Running back Mike Bell will also likely be joining the Eagles from the Saints.
Free agents Tracy White and Jeremiah Trotter are also unsigned.
The personnel moves clearly indicate the Eagles will be drafting a defensive end and a linebacker, and probably an offensive lineman early in the April 2010 draft.
The team has four picks in the first three rounds of the draft.
