The NFL free agency period starts at midnight on Friday, and the Philadelphia Eagles' new GM says the team will spend money. But could Terrell Owens and Julius Peppers be part of the Eagles' plan?
With the players and owners in a bitter contract dispute, all rules are off for the 2010 NFL season. An uncapped season means teams can spend as much (or as little) as they want on free agents.
Trades are more likely in the offseason and more veterans will be cut.
Howie Roseman, the Eagles' new general manager, is an expert in the salary caps and money issues. He told reporters last week the Eagles will spend what they need to in the offseason to be competitive.
“All the resources are available to us to improve the team," Roseman said. What he likely meant was that the Eagles will cut or trade a few players to free up money to sign a few players.
Here is a look at nine players who may be wearing an Eagles' uniform next season.
Shawne Merriman
The San Diego defensive end is a restricted free agent and wants out of San Diego now. The Eagles have extra draft picks and may have more if Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb or Michael Vick are traded.
Merriman fits the Andy Reid – Joe Banner profile: former star coming off an injury they can sign to a deal with upfront money and an easy out if Merriman doesn't play well (aka Stacey Andrews).
Aaron Kampman
The Green Bay defensive end is a perfect fit for the Eagles but is coming off a torn ACL. Kampman is a free agent and Green Bay is moving to a 3-4 defense. Again, an Eagles kind of player: high value coming off an injury, so he can be signed for 1/3 the price of Julius Peppers.
Julius Peppers
How does $15 a year sound for the free-agent all-Pro defensive end? It's too rich for the Panthers. The Eagles could get creative with a contract, but Peppers is most likely heading to New York.
Gary Brackett
The former Rutgers star and Colts' defensive leader doesn't fit the Eagles past tendencies about spending money on linebackers. But he would fill a huge void for a team that struggled after Stewart Bradley got hurt. Signing Brackett would let the Eagles move Bradley to the strong side.
Derrick Burgess
Remember him? Burgess, 32, played well as a situation player for the New England Patriots and he would be an affordable back up defensive end. And he's be a lot cheaper to sign than other free agents.
Willie Parker
The former Steelers starter lost his job last season in Pittsburgh and he would be a good compliment to LeSean McCoy. Parker hasn't played in the West Coast offense but he also could be very effective as a receiving back.
Ryan Clark
The free agent free safety played for the Steelers last season. Clark, 30, also survived gigs in Washington and New York, and he an operation in 2007 to remove his spleen and gallbladder after getting ill during a game in Denver. Clark would fill a big need and let the Eagles draft a safety and move Macho Harris to cornerback.
Terrell Owens
Why would the Eagles ever sign Terrell Owens? They only have three receivers who are likely to return, unless Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown are kept on the roster. Why did Andy Reid sign Michael Vick? Rumors that Owens and McNabb are now friends again have added to fuel to this story.
Tim Tebow
We know from reports at the combine and Senior Bowl the Eagles are scouting Tebow heavily. If Tebow doesn't get picked by Jacksonville, the Eagles would probably draft him as an experiment. But not in the first round (we think).
