The Philadelphia Eagles made their first significant move of the offseason, redoing Cullen Jenkins' contract in what could be a prelude to signing DeSean Jackson.

The team announced on Tuesday that Jenkins agreed to a revised contract. He had been due a large bonus in the offseason, and there was talk Jenkins could be released in a money-saving move.

However, the new deal now gives the Eagles the ability to use the franchise tag on Jackson, or seek a long-term deal with the free agent receiver.

Jackson would get a $9 million, one-year contract with the Eagles if the team uses the franchise tag.

With Asante Samuel expected to be traded, the Eagles could also be free to add another big-time free agent, or extend the contracts of LeSean McCoy or Jeremy Maclin.

Jenkins was due nearly $8 million in 2012, including a $5 million roster bonus in March.

Jenkins had 40 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 2011, and was perhaps the best player on the Eagles' defense.

The Eagles have until March 5th at 4 p.m. to decide on the franchise tag for Jackson, or to let him hit the free agent market.
