Would the Eagles hire a talk radio guest host to be their middle linebacker? It might happen.
Former Philadelphia Eagles star Jeremiah Trotter did a surprise workout for coach Andy Reid on Thursday.
Trotter, 32, hasn’t played football in two years and is a fill-in radio host at 610 WIP.
The move shows how openly unhappy the team is with Omar Gaither, the team’s current middle linebacker, and backup Joe Mays.
Gaither had a poor game against New Orleans. Mays lost the starter’s job in the preseason after Stewart Bradley hurt his knee.
With Bradley gone for the year and few quality free agent linebackers available, Trotter might get this third shot with the Eagles.
Trotter starred with the Eagles but was cut in a salary dispute and signed in Washington.
After the Redskins cut Trotter, he came back to Philadelphia and became an All-Pro. He was cut two years’ ago after injuries significantly slowed his on-field performance.
Now, Trotter says he’s in shape, faster than ever and wants to play.
"I told [Reid] I was in great shape and I could help him out," Trotter told 610 WIP on Thursday. "Nothing happened. But he called me [yesterday] and wanted me to come in for a workout."
“Obviously, I'm not in football shape. That's going to take me getting out on the field."
The Eagles are reportedly checking to see how far away Trotter would be from getting in game shape.
The team has until week 9 of the season to make a trade for players.
If it were to sign Trotter, a player on the active roster would need to be released.
