BOSTON - Roy Oswalt will make a public announcement Thursday, his agent Bob Garber confirmed to ESPN Boston, though the nature of his statement remained unknown.
The unsigned pitcher is widely expected to address his future in the game.
The free-agent was hoping to land with the Texas Rangers or St. Louis Cardinals but failed to work out a deal with either of last season's World Series finalists.
The Boston Red Sox were being promoted as a possible destination for the 34-year-old three-time All-Star, although Oswalt snubbed an earlier offer while apparently holding out for a team closer to his Mississippi home.
A source close to the Red Sox told ESPN Boston the team is still interested in the veteran right-hander, who reportedly has been seeking a starting role and a one-year contract worth $10 million.
Oswalt pitched 139 regular-season innings for the Philadelphia Phillies last year, going 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA and 93 strikeouts.
