Phillies Name Moyer As Fifth Starter

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro tells Fox 29 that Jaimie Moyer will be the team’s fifth starter as spring training opens next Thursday.

Moyer, 47, makes several trips to the hospital in the offseason as he recovered from groin surgery and the veteran from Sellersville, Pa., is in the last year of his Phillies’ contract.

“Jaime’s come along really well and he adds some depth in our rotation,” Amaro said.

“It’s his spot to lose,” Amaro also said.

Moyer told Amaro that he will be ready to pitch for the Phillies when the 2010 season starts.

The Phillies also have Kyle Kendrick and several minor league players who could content for the fifth starter role if Moyer is not available.
