The Fair Debt Collections Practices Act is designed to protect consumers from aggressive debt collectors.
But some collectors are not deterred in their effort to get their money.
Attorney Amy Feldman talked about what consumers can do if they feel they are being treated unfairly by collectors on "Good Day Philadelphia."
Under the law, debt collectors may not harass you or any third parties they contact.
They cannot use threats of violence.
They cannot publish the names of people who owe money.
Collectors cannot use obscene language or use the phone to harass you.
And they can't tell you, you will be arrested if you don't pay up.
If you feel like you are being harassed by a collection agency, feldman recommends writing the company a letter stating the facts. Be sure to get a return receipt from the post office.
If it doesn't stop, consider contacting your state Attorney General's office.
