Oprah Winfrey is scheduled to appear in Philadelphia court this month to face defamation charges.
A local woman, who worked at Winfrey's girls' school in South Africa, claims Oprah's remarks after a scandal at the school suggested that she was not trustworthy.
Attorney Amy Feldman explained the hearing is in Philadelphia because the plaintiff filed the suit here. "In order for a case to be filed you have to prove that the defendant had some connection to the person which that lawsuit was filed." Oprah lost her effort to have the proceedings take part in Chicago, where she lives.
Feldman says "in order to make a claim for defamation someone has to show that someone else made a false statement of material fact about her to another party and that fact ruined her reputation."
Oprah said she tried to hire people for the school who cared about the girls as much as she did and she was sorry she was let down. Feldman asks "was she implying that this woman knew there was abuse going on? The woman says 'no.' "
