Cafiero Atty Discusses Webcam Case

PHILADELPHIA - The attorney representing the former technology coordinator for The Lower Merion School District says his client did not know there were 56,000 pictures taken on school-issued laptops.

Charles Mandracchia is the attorney for Carol Cafiero. He told "Good Day" that Cafiero "had nothing to do with the Blake Robbins controversy."

He says the picture released of Robbins sleeping "almost looks staged."

Mandracchia also said it would be difficult to photograph someone sleeping at that angle from a laptop camera. He says an expert will be able to determine the authenticity of the shot.

Mandracchia explained 36,000 of the images came from a 2008 incident where six computers were stolen. He says the district did know the webcams were being turned on, but his client "had no real direct involvement in most of that. She only turned on the computer I think twice."

Mandracchia says Cafiero did bring up the issue, of turning on the cameras, in an effort to establish a policy several times with colleagues. He says the picture option was part of the "bundle" that came with the laptop contract.

"It wasn't something they were looking at." He says even though students weren't officially notified, "I think most of the students knew, that arising out of the September 2008 incident, it went around."
