Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey was police chief in Washington, D.C., during the 2002 sniper attacks.
Sniper mastermind John Allen Muhammad is scheduled to be executed Tuesday for the attacks. Ramsey told "Good Day Philadelphia" on Tuesday morning, "I, personally, think it is the appropriate punishment."
Ramsey said the attacks impacted everyone in the Washington, D.C., area, adding, "It was the most intense time period I've gone through."
Ramsey said at one point he stopped wearing a lanyard that identified his son's school because he was afraid his son could be targeted: "No one knew what was going to happen next."
Muhammad was sentenced to death for killing Dean Harold Meyers at a Virginia gas station during the shooting spree. By the time Muhammad was caught, ten people were killed in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Muhammad is to be put to death by lethal injection unless Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine intervenes. On Tuesday afternoon, Kaine denied a plea for clemency.
