Mayor, Union Say State Must 'Act Now'

FOP head John McNesby is urging lawmakers in Harrisburg to pass legislation that would avoid layoffs within the Philadelphia Police Department.

McNesby told "Good Day," any cuts to the police force would put the safety of fellow officers and the city in jeopardy. McNesby said the force is already understaffed. He said "we've got to get these bills passed in Harrisburg to make sure jobs aren't lost."

McNesby said he is in contact with Mayor Nutter and the police commissioner. He is calling on the public to contact lawmakers and urge them to take action to save Philadelphia jobs.

The FOP said "people's lives will be in danger" if the police force loses any officers.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is in Harrisburg fighting for the city.

He spoke with "Good Day" by phone.

House Bill-1828 would allow the city to raise its sales tax and delay payments to the city's pension system. The five-year plan would pump much needed cash into the city's coffers and help avoid layoffs.

Mayor Nutter said amendments were added to the legislation within the last day which have nothing to do with Philadelphia. He said "it is time for action right now, not amendments." Mayor Nutter said "the city deserves better than this. We need the Commonwealth to take action now."

The legislation will be reviewed today by lawmakers. Nutter said he is hoping for a vote tomorrow.
