As former Pennsylvania state Sen. Vince Fumo heads to prison, former Philadelphia City Councilman Jimmy Tayoun has some advice.
Tayoun served 40 months in prison for mail fraud, racketeering and other charges. He has written a book about the experience. It's called "Going To Prison."
Tayoun told "Good Day" the most important thing to know is Fumo should not arrive at the low-security facility before 2 p.m. If Fumo arrives too early, Tayoun said, "It's a wasted day."
Tayoun also said it's important to bring cash to put into a commissary account. He said if you write a check it takes a while for it to clear, so you can't purchase anything. Tayoun explaned, prisoners use their commissary account to pay for stamps, make phone calls and get their hair cut.
Tayoun said one of the biggest things Fumo will have to get used to is, "He will be equal to everyone else. He doesn't exist. He is nothing."
Fumo will be serving 4 1/2 years at a prison in Ashland, Ky. He was convicted of defrauding two Philadelphia non-profits and the state senate.
