The unemployment rate in Philadelphia remains high.
Mayor Michael Nutter discussed what the city is doing to help ease the unemployment burden on "Good Day." The mayor acknowledged "it's very, very rough out there."
The city is offering $27 million for small businesses and has launched the PhillyWorks program. Mayor Nutter says "what city's are doing across America is getting these monies out from the American Recovery Act as soon as we get them in." The Mayor says there are a lot of people going into job training programs related to the green economy. There is also a gap financing program to help "projects that are just about ready to go, but they have a little gap in their funds because the credit markets seized."
The Mayor explained that government doesn't help create jobs but "we have the funding sources though to help the private sector create jobs." The funding is getting out, "but not as fast as any of us like."
