PHILADELPHIA - Local reporter Ralph Cipriano says timing and luck helped him land a one-on-one interview with former State Sen. Vince Fumo.
Cipriano discussed his meeting and the story he wrote for Philadelphia Magazine on "Good Day Philadelphia" Tuesday morning.
Cipriano said he simply asked Fumo for the interview after the trial. He said, "Yes, I got lucky."
The interview took place in Fumo's four-story mansion on Green Street. Cirpriano reported the house has five bathrooms, 10 bedrooms, seven fireplaces, a wine cellar and an underground shooting range. The house has been on the market for two years. The asking price has dropped from $7 million to $5 million dollars.
Cipriano also interviewed for the magazine report Fumo's housekeeper, who actually testified against him during his corruption trial. She said Fumo has 19 Oreck vacuum cleaners in the house.
Fumo told Cipriano he is "afraid to dine out," so he now cooks at home. He has 160 cookbooks. The two dined on T-bone steak, feta and tomato salad, potatoes, and a spinach dish. Cipriano said the former lawmaker is a good cook.
Cipriano also chatted with Fumo's girlfriend, who he called "charming." She told him that Fumo is "misunderstood."
Fumo was convicted in March of 137 counts of fraud, conspiracy, obstruction of justice and filing a false tax return.
Cipriano's story is in the August edition of Philadelphia Magazine.
