MESA - A 15-year-old boy was not only driving a truck without a license but had been drinking before he crashed, according to Mesa Police, and it was all caught on camera.

It happened Sunday night at the Zone gas station at Broadway and Val Vista in Mesa.

Police say a 15-year-old male with a learner's permit was driving a 2008 Dodge pickup northbound on Val Vista, approaching Broadway.

He turned into the gas station and bought a box of condoms, and tried to leave. In an apparent attempt to avoid the traffic light, he went around the parking lot. But somehow, he lost control and struck a concrete pillar between two gas pumps, causing extensive damage to the vehicle and the pillar.

"Couple more feet and would've hit a gas pump, and who knows what would've happened then," says store supervisor Ali Chamseddine.

Flying debris from the collision caused damage to the gas pumps as well, the damage in the thousands.

The boy was not hurt, but was found to be impaired with either drugs or alcohol and arrested. His name will not be released because he is a juvenile.

The boy's dad told us the truck he crashed belonged to his mom. Dennis Karle said his son was going to get a new truck for his 16th birthday -- but who knows if that will still happen or not.

"He's a teenager, how many teenagers do you know that wouldn't try alcohol and then drugs now and then," says Karle. "He has to pay for what he's done wrong, if you don't learn now what's gonna happen later?"
