Santorum To Return To Campaign Monday

Posted: Updated:

Rick Santorum's camp announced Saturday the candidate will return to the campaign trail Tuesday in his home state of Pennsylvania, tamping down speculation he may drop out of the presidential primary race.

Citing a schedule of events released Saturday morning, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Santorum will appear at a sportsmen's club in Bedford on Tuesday morning and an event at Lancaster Bible College that evening.

On Wednesday, the former Pennsylvania senator is scheduled to attend a "Red Meat" tour event hosted by talk radio station WPHT-AM. He will then appear at the Westmoreland County Republican Party spring dinner in Greensburg, Pa.

Santorum scheduled no campaign events over the long holiday weekend, prompting talk he may be preparing to withdraw from the primary race. Calls by prominent Republicans for Santorum to concede have intensified since Mitt Romney's decisive sweep of the Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington, D.C. primaries Tuesday.

Also, Santorum's campaign said Friday that his daughter Bella, who suffers from a genetic condition called Trisomy 18, had been taken to the hospital for an undisclosed reason. The candidate left the campaign trail for several days earlier this year because the three-year-old was ill.

Santorum has expressed hope he could regain his momentum with a commanding victory in the April 24 Pennsylvania primary and then close the gap with Romney by winning a series of southern primaries scheduled for May.

That strategy, however, was thrown into doubt this week, when a poll of Pennsylvania voters showed Romney surging into a five-percentage point lead.

Santorum's road to a primary win will presumably grow steeper as the Romney campaign uses its financial advantage to launch a barrage of advertising in the state. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has reported that $2.9 million worth of pro-Romney television ads are slated to beginning running in Pennsylvania Monday.
