The search is on for $8,000 in missing drug-related cash seizes as evidence in Delaware County.
The incident happened at Upper Darby Police Headquarters. Fox 29’s Dave Schratwieser has learned that $8,000 in seized drug money vanished from evidence lock up. The money was seized during an arrest back in November 2009.
Two months ago, a judge ordered the money returned to the suspect, claiming it was seized during an improper search. When authorities went to return the money, they discovered it was gone from the evidence room where it was being stored.
Police Superintendent Mike Chitwood is not too pleased and is promising to get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible.
He has launched a professional standards investigation of the investigation room. He added that they are early into the investigation and told Schratwieser that the money may have been burnt as part of an evidence burn.
An internal investigation is also underway and the DA is looking into this incident. In the meantime, the township wrote a check to replace the money.
The investigation may take a couple of weeks to complete.
