St. Paul's Grand Avenue is known for its quaint shops and local flare, but a new place that is planning to open soon is already raising eyes with signs that advertise a peep show for boys and girls.
Shoppers flock to the eclectic mix of upscale stores, but a new shop that will open next month is already piquing curiosity by offering a sneak peek of what is to come.
David Ulrich began remodeling the building a few months ago, after the Twin Cities Eye Clinic moved into the old Blockbuster Video store's spot next door. He owns several eyewear stores across the metro, and he hopes the new Spectacle Shoppe will become a destination there.
"It was fun to have people look," he said. "Make a splash here -- and have people looking at it."
Yet, some neighbors found his advertising strategy for the grand opening to be eye-opening. Some even called the mayor, who is expected to attend, after mistakenly thinking he planned to cut the ribbon on a sex shop or gentleman's club.
Since then, Ulrich added a banner to the top of one sign to help avoid any further confusion, and he says once shoppers find out he's selling pairs of glasses, he won't hear a peep of criticism.
