CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: Four teens, five people total, hopped aboard a CTA bus to shield themselves from bullets but it was too late. Police say they were all struck, including a 19 year old female who was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Fox Chicago reports a 20 year old man was also grazed in the hand by a bullet and transported himself to South Shore Hospital.

The shootings took place near the intersection of East 79th Street and South Jeffery Boulevard about 3:30 p.m., said police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala, citing preliminary information.

It happened in broad daylight steps away from a bus stop, a church and Aja Jones' two children attending day care.

A male approached the five people and began firing multiple shots before fleeing in a mini-van, Zala said. The shooting left at least two people in critical condition.

"I just rushed up here as soon as I could because I feel for these kids over here. Lord knows, I just love my kids and I would hate for something to happen," said Jones.

Nearly five dozen children were at the Prodigy Child Learning Center near East 79th Street and South Jeffrey Boulevard when several shots were fired outside. Police say the gunman approached the group of teens.

The female victim was hit in her right side and back, one 17 year old was struck in the stomach, another 17 year old was hit in the thigh and a 16 year old was shot point blank in the chest.

According to Jones, "One collapsed on the bus and my heart goes out to that family."

"It's a good daycare but coming from work and seeing all the police out here with the streets blocked off it really had me worried. I had to come down the street a little faster than I usually do to make sure that my child wasn't in danger," said Fallon Williams.

Police say the shooting is gang related.

The gunman took off in a minivan that was discovered nearby with the weapon.

According to Williams, "It's a lot of little kids here during this time so it would be nice if the violence didn't take place at all."

The CTA rerouted 79th Street buses while police investigated.

Area South detectives are investigating, but no on was in custody as of Friday evening.
