Police Discuss Officer-Involved Shooting Caught On Camera

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

It's shocking cell phone video of a Philadelphia police officer being beaten with his own weapon while onlookers do nothing. Now, police are talking about it.

This happened earlier this month on the corner of North 52nd and West Jefferson Streets.

A robbery suspect attacks the officer, wailing on him with his own baton and forcing the officer to fire his gun.

It's stunning cell phone video. A young Philadelphia police officer firing on a robbery suspect as the man lunges at him with the officer's own baton.

It's a situation many of us could never imagine ourselves in, but Philadelphia police say it's a frightening experience many of them can relate to.

Lt. Raymond Evers says the video reminded him of his days on the street getting into a struggle with bad guys where quick thinking makes all the difference.

In this case, Evers says the officer made several calculations in a very short time.

The shocking video blew up social media with many putting themselves in the officers shoes.

On Facebook, one woman marveled at the officer's training saying in part, "did you see how he defended against having his gun taken? Even while getting hit in the head he never let his hands off it."

Evers says that very training and split-second decision making make the difference between life and death.
