FOX 29 Locates Owner Of Collapsing House

Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A house in Southwest Philadelphia is collapsing, sending bricks and debris falling just inches from the house next door.

The woman who lives next door called us for help, afraid her home would come down with the one that's collapsing.

One day after we started making calls, work crews were out at the property Wednesday starting the demolition.

The property owner had until Wednesday to act. Now, he'll get a bill from the city.

So, why did the owner leave that house falling down, threatening his neighbors' safety?

The owner of the property spoke with FOX 29's Bruce Gordon.

Ron Griffin, 64, is a part-time truck driver who bought the row home on South Conestoga back in 1980 and lived there till the late 90s, when he says expensive repairs forced him out.

On the day a city contractor began demolishing the partially-collapsed row home at 1842 South Conestoga, Gordon found the building's owner living in an apartment at 45th and Walnut streets.

Griffin said he hasn't visited his former residence in years. He says he wasn't aware of the partial collapse in the big storms of last August, which damaged Ruby Festus' residence one house up, and he admits he ignored the city's demand that he clean up his place or pay to have it demolished.

Griffin said he was too embarrassed to return to his row home and too intimidated to reach out to the city. He faces a $15,000 bill demolition.
