MANSFIELD, N.J. -

Six firefighters were injured, one of them seriously, after responding to a truck fire on Interstate 295 in New Jersey.

The fire scene was on I-295 at Columbus Road (Exit 52) in Mansfield, Burlington County.

State police reported that they got a call for a car fire around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters then arrived to find a truck fire in the southbound lanes.

One firefighter was standing behind the trailer when the doors blew open. That firefighter was knocked down and injured. Other firefighters were reported to have suffered less severe injuries.

A medical helicopter was called to the scene, and the northbound lanes of I-295 were shut down for the chopper to land and pick up the firefighter who was knocked down. He was flown to Capital Health in Trenton, where he was listed in serious condition.

Both northbound lanes were opened up shortly after, and by 3:30 p.m. one lane was getting by on the southbound side. But two lanes of traffic remained blocked at 6 p.m. as police investigated at the scene.
