PHILADELPHIA -

He lost his girlfriend in this accident and now, seven months later, he's still trying to figure out what happened to his van and his belongings.

Eugene Fields, 46, still walks with a limp – a constant reminder of the late night last October when he crossed 51st and Locust streets in his 1995 Nissan Quest minivan.

He remembers entering the intersection and then hearing a loud bang.

His girlfriend, Stacey Mason, died in the crash, and Fields spent seven weeks in the hospital and rehab.

With help from his mother and sister, he began asking for the whereabouts of his minivan and the hundreds of dollars worth of DJ equipment inside.

Fields says the police had few answers.

FOX 29's Bruce Gordon went to the 18th District police station Thursday, where he was told a fatal accident would have been investigated by the police department's Accident Investigation Division.

AID had no record of towing Fields' vehicle, but suggested the department's Neighborhood Services Unit might have picked it up.

It turns out a private company towed the Quest from the scene – all perfectly legitimate. When neighborhood services used the vehicle identification number to notify the owner to come and pick it up, the VIN came back to a Mr. Nguyen on Mifflin Street not Eugene Fields.

Since Fields never got the notifications, he never responded, and the vehicle was sent to salvage. It's long gone.

Fields insists the vehicle was his and says he'll reach out to the dealer who sold him the van to figure out how the paperwork got fouled up.
