NJ Tickets Drivers Who Don't Restrain Pets In Car

Posted: Updated:

Want to take your precious pooch for a car ride in New Jersey? Well, it could cost your big bucks if you don't follow the rules.

Once you cross into the Garden State, any officer, state trooper, or even a state SPCA officer can pull you over and ticket you at their discretion.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and the state SPCA say not all drivers are that cautious. So, they're focusing on enforcing a law already on the books – especially during shore travel season for drivers who don't safeguard antsy pets.

The law targets drivers who let pets ride in the front seat, on the driver's lap, hanging out the window, or in the back of a pickup truck.

Most people FOX 29 News talked to Thursday claimed they were in favor of the law, but many pulled off with clear violations.

The law doesn't mean all pets have to be in a cage or leashed. You won't get pulled over if your pet is still. Also, this applies not just to dogs but also cats in rear windows, too. The fine is $250 to $1,000.
