Was SEPTA Worker Targeted For A Hit?

PHILADELPHIA -

Was a SEPTA worker targeted for a hit? That's what cops are trying to figure out.

Flashing lights and police tape surrounded a South Philadelphia intersection after that worker was shot several times Thursday morning.

The suspects ran up to the veteran SEPTA trolley car operator and opened fire as he was getting in his van at Elmwood Avenue and 71st Street on his way to work.

The wife of shooting victim Aaron Hayes Sr. was overcome with emotion as she hugged friends just a few feet from where her husband was shot.

Jose Rodriguez owns the mini mart across the street from the shooting scene. His video cameras caught the whole shooting on tape. He described what he saw on tape as the gunman approached Hayes.

Detectives say Hayes had just started his conversion van with a remote control seconds before the shooting. As he approached the truck and opened the rear doors, a white male with dark baggy clothes opened fire.

Hayes worked right down the block from his home at the Elmwood SEPTA depot. He has been a trolley operator for over 27 years.

He was still listed in very critical condition Thursday night at the hospital. Police say they are looking for a getaway car described as a gray or black Mitsubishi driven by a white female.
