CAMDEN, N.J. -

FOX 29 is working to get results for drivers waiting for a bridge to get replaced.

The Baird Boulevard Bridge over the Cooper River in Camden has been torn up for months, driving commuters crazy.

They say it has been a major headache, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles can't get through, and it's terrible at rush hour.

The span was closed to traffic months ago after flood waters from Hurricane Irene last August caused major structural damage. The popular Camden cut-through highway has been closed ever since.

So-called "fast-track" repairs and re-construction were supposed to start two months ago. But as of Friday, no construction equipment was even on site yet.

The $8-million bridge overhaul is being run by Camden County. A spokesman says it took some time to get permits for the project.

Construction is now expected to start this fall.

In contrast, the $12-million reconstruction of the State Street Bridge a mile away is ahead of schedule. It could reopen in late fall.

Drivers who used to take the Baird Boulevard Bridge are skeptical about when their project will get done, FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reported.
