PHILADELPHIA -

It's a serious problem that's been brewing for years. It's dangerous, and it's an eyesore.

Every time 73-year-old Essie Burchette steps out on the back porch of her Southwest Philadelphia row home, what does she have to look at? Downed wires everywhere.

She said it looks like a jungle, and she can't go out into her own backyard.

Burchette's Catherine Street home is now surrounded in the back by low-hanging wires. And it's been like this since a storm two years ago took down a neighbor's tree, then knocked down the wires and the poles that hold them up.

Various attempts to get this repaired have failed.

Burchette called the city's 3-1-1 hotline, Comcast, PECO and finally Verizon. She says a Verizon foreman came out to survey the damages, but nothing has been done. She's worried about a fire at her home.

It could be a fire hazard, she says, because nobody can get out of the alley, and she can't get out because of the wires and the poles.

She and her granddaughter, Ebony, got so frustrated that they turned to FOX 29.

FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser called Verizon officials to find out why this hasn't been fixed. They now say a work crew could be out at Burchette's home as early as Tuesday morning.

Burchette hopes the cleanup and repairs will start soon. She hopes she can finally enjoy a backyard barbeque with her family this summer.
