Purple Heart Recipient Denied VA Housing Benefits

Posted: Updated:
BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. -

A Bucks County Army veteran who was nearly killed in Afghanistan says his country has betrayed him. He says he is being denied military benefits, leaving his family without a home.

When Joseph Gunsenhouser volunteered for the Army, he knew he'd be heading into a war zone. Then, six months after deployment to northern Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device exploded while he was setting up security for his camp.

He suffered permanent eye damage and still lives with pieces of shrapnel in his neck. Not to mention mental scars.

But after being awarded the Purple Heart and honorable discharge, he says the Army turned its back on him.

"This is betrayal. It really is. I mean, it's just betrayal," he said.

After his discharge, Gunsenhouser was given a VA housing voucher allowing his family of four to find a rental to get back on their feet. But that benefit was stripped away by Veterans Affairs.

He didn't finish his required two years because he was wounded and sent home. Now, the family has moved in to her parents living room in a tiny twin in Bensalem.

The family is begging Veterans Affairs to reconsider, but so far no luck.

We tried to contact Veterans Affairs on Wednesday night to ask why the housing benefit was taken away. We've also contacted Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick's office, where staff assured us they are looking into the problem.
