SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -
It's not just adults that want dangerous synthetic drugs gone for good. We spoke to a teen who also wants K2 banned. This girl is a former classmate of Mitchell Young, one of the men accused in the deadly attack on a local family while he was allegedly high on K2.
When she saw him on the news accused of such a violent crime it was a wake up call, so she decided to speak out because she doesn't want to lose more friends to the dangerous drug.
"Sure, the high is cool for now, but look at what can happen while you have that high," said Brianna Harwood.
She is just one teenager with one voice, but she has a big desire to make a difference.
"It's my generation. I'd hate to see them all killed off one day or in prison for killing others or in a psych ward or something. I hope I can make a difference in this."
Hardwood says she has never tried K2, Spice, or any other synthetic drug and she doesn't want to because she has seen the damaging effects it's had on some of her friends, including Young, an acquaintance.
Young and Tucker Cipriano are locked up right now awaiting trial in the baseball attack that left Robert Cipriano dead and Tucker's mom and brother seriously injured. Authorities believe the two may have been high on Spice.
"It was kind of a scary thing for me knowing somebody," Harwood said. "He wasn't like that at all. I mean that's why when it came out he was on K2, that's why I wouldn't put it past him because that wasn't him. He was quiet, kind of shy, into his music."
"I'm proud of her, I really am," said her mother.
She realizes her daughter speaking out against something many other teens think is cool may cause her to lose friends, but K2, Spice, Black Sabbath, whatever you want to call it, it isn't cool. It's dangerous. That's why Lisa Harwood has also made her house off limits.
"After seeing what this drug has done to these kids, I don't want them coming into my home. I want to help them, but I also have to look out for my safety and my daughters."
"I hope that others that feel the same way that I do will speak up and speak out and voice their opinion on it, too."
