DARBY, Pa. -

Dozens of people in Darby, Delaware County won't be staying at their homes tonight.

An underground wire caught on fire, sending dangerous chemicals spewing into the air and into their homes.

70 people can't back in until maybe tomorrow morning that's six buildings, mostly businesses and one apartment building.

You can see crews are still repairing that underground line and still no word on why it caught fire.

Nearly six hours after an underground fire forced people on Main Street in Darby borough to evacuate dozens found out they weren't getting back in.

Fire officials lead residents of apartment building 850 back in briefly to get enough stuff to carry them through the night.

That's the building were the fire started underground sending dangerous levels of carbon dioxide in the air.

Businesses closed up shop, and residents waited patiently while crews worked feverishly through the evening.

The Red Cross told residents the community center would be open for them to stay for the night not the accommodations some were expecting.

Others say they'll make the best of it. They're just happy they got out in time and no one got hurt.

Fans are still going in the buildings evacuated to get down the co levels. Electricity should be restored in the morning when crews finish repairing the line.
