Catholic School In Manayunk May Close Its Doors

Posted: Updated:

Kids hoping to go to catholic school in Philadelphia's Manayunk neighborhood in the Fall, may be out of luck.

Jessica and Jackie Kazmarcheck have gone to the same catholic school in Manayunk for years.  So when the Philadelphia archdiocese promised to keep holy child open under a different name, they rejoiced.

Holy Child would have to merge with St. Bridget in East Falls.  The new school would be called St. Blaise.  But still, it was a true blessing, since the archdiocese would be closing so many other schools because of declining attendance.  Then last Friday, parents received this letter that if  St. Blaise didn't sign up almost 100 more children by this Friday, it would never open.

The archdiocese won't say how many more children have enrolled over the past week, but parents are convinced her prayers won't be answered. So they'll have to find another catholic school for their son or daughters.

Tomorrow is the last day of school, so kids will be saying goodbye, not knowing whether it's for the summer, or forever. The archdiocese is expected to announce its decision Monday.

It was a gloomy Sunday as the whole area remain socked in with low clouds & fog, drizzle and scattered showers.

The weather remains unsettled through most of the work week. The difference is that it will really warm up -- temperatures soar into the 80s by Tuesday.  That mild and humid air mass will fuel afternoon thunderstorms.

By Thursday a cold front moves by bringing more rain.  It will also bring drier and cooler weather by Friday as we finally clear out.
