MEDIA, Pa. - A dog is clinging to life at the Delaware County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Adoption Center after allegedly being deliberately starved in a Chester basement.
According to the Delaware County SPCA, repair workers found Precious, a 3-year-old female pit bull, in a water and debris-filled basement after a hot water heater burst in a home last week. They say the dog was found fatally anemic, flea infested and suffering from ear infections in water, debris and feces.
The dog was brought out of the home and into the backyard before authorities were notified.
The dog's owner has been cited Thursday with two animal-cruelty offenses for failing to provide adequate food and veterinary care for the dog, according to officials. Witnesses have alleged the dog's mother had died from similar neglect in the basement years before Precious was found.
Precious had been in the care of the Delaware County SPCA Adoption Center, located at 555 Sandy Bank Road, Media, Thursday night, where she was receiving medical care. Officials there said the dog weighed just 19 pounds when found, when the typical weight for a dog of her breed and age would be in the range of 40 to 50 pounds.
Donations for the dog's care are being accepted by clicking here, or by sending a check with a note that the funds are for Precious' care to:
