Sandusky's Defense Starts Monday

Posted: Updated:
BELLEFONTE, Pa. -

The defense is set to take over in the case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

It was a week of graphic testimony painting Sandusky as a predator, FOX 29's Bruce Gordon reported Friday from Bellefonte.

Seven months after the charges were filed, Sandusky spent the week face to face with a parade of accusers, alleging all manner of sexual abuse.

One by one, the now young men described meeting Sandusky when they were mere boys through his Second Mile charity and reveling in the attention lavished by a Penn State football icon, only to find themselves the victim of sexual assault: groping, oral sex – even anal rape – usually in Sandusky's State College home or at a Penn State shower facility

The defense could only chip away at the fringes of the allegations, such as times and dates, and note that many of the accusers stayed in contact with the defendant even after the alleged abuse.

Penn State's bungled handling of the scandal led to criminal charges against two top school officials and the ouster of head football coach Joe Paterno and the university president.

Courtroom testimony and new reports out of Penn State did nothing to erase the stain of indifference.

When the defense begins its case Monday, it will no doubt highlight Sandusky's many years of good works through that Second Mile charity.

But beating back the specific allegations won't be easy. Eight separate alleged victims and two eyewitnesses with nothing to gain by coming forward spent the trial's first week painting Sandusky as a mentor who became a monster.
