Syringes Found on Jersey Shore

Posted: Updated:

Officials with the Long Beach Island Health Department have shutdown ocean access on several beaches after syringes, trash and debris washed ashore Saturday.

People playing and relaxing along Ship Bottom, Harvey Cedars, Bargenat Light, Surf City and an area known as North Beach Haven were told to stay away from the water after the waste washed up. However, they were allowed to play along the sand furthest from the water.

Health officials say the waste could have come from sewer overflow problems in areas north of the beaches.

A Ship Bottom lifeguard that spoke with FOX29 said he found four syringes and turned them over to authorities.

A representative from the health department said officials will check the shorelines Sunday morning to see if anymore waste has washed ashore before giving the ok to reopen the beaches.

UPDATE: A health department official tells Fox29 that all beaches along LBI reopened Sunday morning.  The shoreline was combed, and all debris was removed.
