It was still a very active crime scene Monday morning in the quiet Doylestown neighborhood where a 10-hour standoff took place Sunday
Investigators were searching for clues after a New Jersey police officer fired on fellow law enforcement but later surrendered peacefully just before midnight.
Off-duty Clifton Township Police Dept. Richard Klementovich is now being held on bail set at $1 million.
Police now say they were called to Bittersweet Drive on Sunday afternoon by the 42-year-old suspect, himself, over an alleged civil dispute.
When police arrived, there was a note in the driveway addressed to the Doylestown Police Department alerting officers to his 2,000 rounds of ammunition.
When police began to back away from the residence, Klementovich started shooting.
During the standoff, residents were either evacuated or told to stay in their basements.
Klementovich's ex-wife and two school-age children were never inside the house, as was previously reported by police.
Klementovich now faces 13 counts of attempted homicide and other charges. He's being held in the Bucks County prison.
When neighbors came out Monday morning, they found their neighborhood and several police vehicles destroyed.
On Monday afternoon, Clifton police released a statement that said the department was "shocked and saddened to learn of the unfortunate event that took place" Sunday.
Klementovich was hired by the Department in 1998 and, prior to that, served in the U.S. Army Airborne Divison. He's a veteran of the Gulf War. A member of the patrol division, he's said to have been "a decorated officer who received numerous commendations throughout his tenure with this agency."
"In response to the events that transpired yesterday afternoon, members of this agency responded to the scene and worked in conjunction with Pennsylvania authorities throughout the ordeal," the news release says. "During the crisis, fellow Clifton officers were able to establish communication with Officer Klementovich and assisted in his eventual surrender. The department is extremely thankful that the situation ended without the loss of life or any serious injury."
Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the standoff.
