Tips to beat the heat

Posted: Updated:

It doesn't take a meteorologist to tell you it's hot out there, but there are some serious precautions you need to take to keep from becoming a victim during this stretch of hot weather.

First, and it seems obvious, but make sure you stay hydrated. And by hydrated we mean drink water. Sugary drinks like iced tea and soda won't do the trick. Also, stay in the shade as much as possible, and try to avoid being outside during the hottest time of the day. That's usually between the hours of 10am and 2pm.

Now if you are indoors during the heat, there are some simple things you can do to keep your home cool. The easiest way to cool things down a couple degrees is to block the heat. So drop the shades and close the curtains. And here's a trick to save you a few bucks on you're electric bill; run your ac unit on a low power, but use a fan to circulate the air.

If you don't have air conditioning or a fan, than you should strongly consider visiting family or friends that do, or get out and spend some time at the mall, or the public library.

It's also important to remember to check on family members and neighbors during this hot streak, especially seniors.

It's hard with our busy schedules, but try to take a minute to check in on your loved ones. We hope these tips help.

Also be sure to look for the latest forecast from your FOX 29 Weather Authority.
