A sweltering day got even hotter inside a pre-school in Laurel Springs, Camden County, after thieves stole the air conditioning units. "It takes a low person to hit a pre-school," owner Kelly Vicario told Fox 29.
The crooks stole the units overnight. Vicario got the call early Thursday morning. "I couldn't believe it," Vicario said in disbelief. "Repeat that, because they stole the whole air conditioner? All of them?" And that turned the school into an oven. "I'm burning up, I'm melting," Vicario said.
Twenty children had already arrived Thursday morning, when a teacher began to wonder why the air seemed so still. "She decides to put the air on, it's not working," Vicario explained. "So she goes out to check the units, which don't exist." Which meant the kids' parents, well on their way to work, had to turn around. "We had to call them all back," Vicario said. "They're on the bridge, they're going to Philadelphia, they're going to Delaware, all over, come back and get the kids."
The owners are scrambling to find replacement air conditioning units on one of the hottest days of the year, when demand is huge. "This is a pre-school with infants, you have young children here," Vicario complained, "pregnant women. And it's ridiculous. It's just... who does that?"
That's what Gloucester Township police are trying to figure out. They say the thieves wanted the copper coils and metal to sell for scrap. Right now they have no suspects.
The good news: Vicario and her husband did find temporary air conditioning units, and so their pre-school will be able to re-open Friday.
