A New Crackdown On A Dangerous & Growing Problem

Posted: Updated:

A cry to do something, anything, about the ATV's rolling through Philadelphia's neighborhoods at high speeds and at all hours.

A new crackdown on a dangerous and growing problem..ATV riders.

The noise and the danger of illegal dirt bike and ATV riders blazing through residential streets has become one of the most common complaints the city gets from residents.

Well the city is  now taking a first step to deal with the problem and part of the plan reaching out to those who break the law. The last thing these kids need to worry about while cooling off in the street.

From Southwest to North Philadelphia, you don't have to look too far to find renegade riders.  In neighborhood packed with kids.

You see them riding on sidewalks. Popping wheelies and weaving through traffic. Why don't police stop them? They're under strict orders not to chase illegal riders.

So as you can imagine they're pretty easy to find. 2 groups even invited us to follow along for an evening ride.

City councilwoman Blondell Reynolds brown is says it's become a life and death issue. She's spearheading a series of hearings to get a handle on the problem.

The city plans to invite riders themselves to get their input.  We spoke with some of them who asked to remain anonymous.

Right now the city has no plans on building such a park. Until they do, these guys say they'll be out here.

According to the federal government, more than 525 people have died in ATV related deaths in Pennsylvania in the last 30 years. City hearings on the illegal riding will take place in the fall.
