Friday Night Storms Pound South Jersey

Posted: Updated:

This wasn't the way anyone wanted to start the weekend down at the Jersey Shore, with heavy rain leaving a mess on the highways.

The storms pounded areas like Ocean County's Stafford Township, which picked up a whopping 5 inches of rain in less than two hours.

That rain flooding roads and several side streets, making the Ocean Acres subdivision live up to its name, FOX 29's Dave Kinchen reported.

Susan Agin saw the water get all the way up to her house.

"Our street became a river, went right up to the driveway and in the garage," she said.

Fortunately she avoided basement flooding. But it was a close call for Darren Clarke and his family. He'll tell you that the water level coming up to the flower beds in front of the house wasn't even the scariest part.

"My wife was here with just my daughter, and the power went out," Clarke said. "Water was rising, so she was trying to get the generator going. It was a little nerve racking."

Flooding was just one of the problems. The storms put thousands without power, forcing crews to work overtime.

AC Electric crews said they were trying to get power back on to at one point at least a couple of thousand customers who were without service.

The torrential rainfall even clogged drains, causing residents to break out their shovels and get to digging.
