Upper Darby Schools Make Major Cuts To Arts, Gym

Posted: Updated:
UPPER DARBY, Pa. -

Parents in Upper Darby are fighting mad following a major blow to programs they say define the school district.

Arts classes in the elementary schools have been nixed following a vote by Upper Darby school board members Tuesday evening. That means dozens of specialists who teach art and music skills, for example, will be leaving as part of the cuts.

The board met on the very stage in the Performing Arts Center auditorium where parents and students say the arts thrive.

Before a crowd of several hundred, the board voted in favor of a budget that makes the cuts and hits taxpayers with a 3.5-percent increase, one of the reasons only two officials voted against it.

Board members hinted at the possibility that some things could change if Pennsylvania legislators provide more state funding. A new Senate proposal contains $2 million for the district, said one board member.

However, the board said that proposal is not a guaranteed rescue plan.
