So just how low will thieves go to get some spending money? Turns out, pretty low. Apparently nothing is sacred, at least not at Community Baptist Church in Camden. "They know that if it's green, it's copper," Pastor David King explained to Fox 29 Wednesday. There's plenty of green on the pastor's church, but after last week there's less of it.
"They took the copper off the front of the church," Pastor King explained. "And I looked around the side, and they had gone all the way down the edge of the church and took all of the copper drains." That's right, the thieves somehow climbed up to the roof line of the old Catholic church and ripped the gutters right off. Only the hooks that held them remain.
Pastor King is frustrated. "Very frustrated," King said. "Wouldn't you be?" Despite the church's good works in a very troubled neighborhood, where murder is almost commonplace, thieves keep targeting Community Baptist.
Camden police say there have been three incidents since last October, although the pastor insisted thieves have hit Community Baptist five times. Late last year, King told Fox 29 crooks cut through a padlocked fence, "and they went in and they stole the air conditioning unit!" King says they even busted through a stained glass window. There is a surveillance camera right across the street, but the pastor doesn't have much faith police will make an arrest for this latest crime. "They're short-handed, and they work very hard," the pastor explained. " So I believe that... well, this ain't important enough, you know?" King admitted, "I feel like a sitting duck."
A Camden city official told Fox 29 a police investigator is still investigating this latest crime, and hopes to meet with Pastor King again.
