Fire Department Gets AED, Firefighter Loses Job

VOORHEES, N.J. -

Two months ago, FOX 29 reported on a defibrillator problem at the Voorhees Township Fire Department.

Due to broken AEDs, some of the fire trucks didn't have the life-saving equipment on board.

Volunteer Firefighter Mark Ressa contacted FOX 29 for help.

After our story aired, a number of organizations came forward saying they were trying to raise the $2,000 needed to buy an AED and donate it to the fire department.

Also, Mark Ressa lost his job.

On Thursday night, the Healing Hearts Foundation donated an AED to the Voorhees Fire Department. Vinnie Voiro presented it to Chief Jim Pacifico.

The foundation was started last year when Voiro's sister, Tina died of heart trouble. Since then they

have been donating AEDs to youth league groups.

When they saw our story they decided to help the fire department. It took them a couple of months to locate one that was compatible with the department's needs.

"When we heard about your story, we thought it went hand and hand. They needed one, and we had one to give them," Voiro said.

Defibrillators help save lives. Now, the entire fleet, including ambulances and fire trucks, have them.

FOX 29's Lauren Cohn asked Pacifico why Ressa, who was trying to help, lost his job.

"I can't talk about that because it's a personnel issue," Pacifico said.

We reached Ressa by phone Thursday night, and he is sad that he lost his job but glad he spoke up so the department now has the new AED.
