Thousands Without Power As Extreme Heat Moves In

Posted: Updated:

Storms that rolled through the area Friday morning left 48,000 electric customers without power in the Philadelphia area.

Severe thunderstorms moved through the city around dawn, and by 6:30 a.m. they were hitting shore communities in South Jersey and Delaware.

At the height of the storm, 35,000 PECO customers and 13,000 AC Electric customers were in the dark.

AC Electric says about half of those customers had their lights back on by 9 a.m. PECO said it had whittle down its number down to 15,000 by about 10:30 a.m.

But the lack of power resulting in a loss of air conditioning for triple-degree heat will make this an uncomfortable day for those who are still doing without.

The storm also caused problems for some commuters. Service on SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail line was temporarily suspended due to downed trees, and service on the Fox Chase line was ending at the Lawndale Station because of a downed tree but was reported to be nearly back on schedule by 9:30 a.m.
