Security camera video and documents released by police Friday in Avalon, N.J., raise questions about a scuffle in a bar involving a top Philadelphia cop.
Lt. Ray Evers, the department's spokesperson, told Fox 29 Investigative reporter, Jeff Cole, earlier this week he was the victim of an assault in the early morning hours of June 17th in the Princeton, a popular bar and restaurant in the beach community of Avalon.
But statements included in the package of documents released by Police under an open records request, tell a conflicting story. The bartender, in a statement to his bosses, claims he jumped over the bar and apparently on top of Evers after the off-duty Lt. allegedly threatened to punch a bar patron in the face. Evers denies he made the threat.
The bar video shows the bartender pouncing on a man in a light shirt and dark pants believed to be Evers. Images captured on a camera posted outside the bar show what appears to be the same man in a scuffle with bar staff in front of the Princeton.
Evers refused to speak on camera Friday, claiming he was in uniform and the incident occurred while he was off duty.
Commissioner Charles Ramsey defended Evers Friday calling him a victim.
Evers told police the bartender punched him in they eye, but documents show a bouncer claims he struck Evers while removing him from the bar. The bouncer claimed Evers tackled him and threw a punch.
Evers denies that.
Evers claims he sent Avalon police pictures of his injuries and denies he attempted to pressure an Avalon police detective to make an arrest.
A charge of simple assault against the bartender is on file with the town's Municipal Court. Police say Evers would have to sign the complaint for the case to move forward. As of Friday afternoon, Evers had not signed the document.
Evers said he expected to meet over the weekend with what he called representatives of Avalon.

Still feels like summer out there. Highs in the mid 80s today. Just like summer, it'll be humid, with a chance of a few spotty showers late in the day.
Tomorrow, strong thunderstorms move through, from the same cold front that caused the midwest tornadoes. That front will also usher in cooler air for the holiday weekend.
