Jim Thome Traded to Baltimore

Posted: Updated:

The Phillies dropped a bombshell Saturday afternoon in announcing they have sent veteran first baseman Jim Thome to the American League in a trade with Baltimore.

In exchange for Thome, the Phillies will pick up catcher Gabriel Lino and right-hander Kyle Simon, according to Senior Vice President and General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

Thome, 41, has batted .242 and has five home runs this season. He has started at first and played as designated hitter.

The trade marks the end of the second stint Thome has made in Philadelphia.

Lino, 19, was picked up by the Orioles from Venezuela, and has a .218 batting average for Delmarva. Simon, 21, was picked up in the 2011 draft from the University of Arizona, and has 3.96 ERA in 14 starts for Frederick this year.
