Man arrested after bizarre South Philadelphia standoff

PHILADELPHIA -

A South Philadelphia man is facing animal cruelty and reckless endangerment charges after keeping police on a bizarre standoff that lasted nearly seven hours.

It began when police were called to the 1800 block of Dickinson Street on a report of a man "barbecuing" a cat, as one police source told FOX29.

Officers arrived to find the charred remains of a cat hanging from a rope on a fence.  When they confronted the man, police say he threatened them.

He remained held up in the home for several hours, with two of his young boys.  Police say they were worried for their welfare, however they later said the man did not appear to have any weapons.

The children were released to the suspect's wife as he rode with police down to South Detectives where he was processed.  Police have not yet released his name.  The case remains under investigation.

No one was hurt during the incident.
