Despite Star Power, Phillies Now 11 Games Back

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The Phillies have their worst record through 81 games since 1997. That was the year they went 23-58.

They took an early lead against the Marlins on Sunday, but it didn't last. Miami took the game 5-2, and the Phillies are now nine games under .500.

Just one month ago, the Phillies were 2 1/2 games back in the division. Now, they're 11 back. The Washington Nationals lead the National League East pack, followed by the Mets, who are only three games back.

After Atlanta lost to Washington, they're 4 1/2 out of first place. And fourth-place Miami is 7 1/2 back, after sweeping the Phillies.

The Phillies must have some star power because three of them got named for the All-Star Game in Kansas City.

Carlos Ruiz, batting .356 and already with a career high of 10 home runs, was voted in by the players as a reserve. It's his first all-star appearance.

Cole Hamels is going back to the all-star game for the third time in his career. He leads the Phillies right now with 10 wins.

And closer Jonathan Papelbon is going for the fifth time in his career. Papelbon is 18 of 19 in save opportunities this year.
