MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A 17-year-old and 15-year-old were charged in connection with the shooting death of 5-year-old Nizzel George on Monday.

The 15-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder. He has not been named because of his age, but prosecutors hope to charge him as an adult.

Stephon Terrell Shannon, 17, is charged with aiding and abetting murder.

Investigators who spoke at a news conference on Monday said the two teens had been staying at a home located at the corner 45th and Camden avenues. That house was shot up the day before George was shot and killed.

The criminal complaint says that the gunman told a witness he fired shots at the house, saying he had been on the porch of a nearby home when it was shot the previous evening. The complaint says the teen believed someone associated with that shooting was staying where George lived.

Charging documents also state that Shannon told a witness he has made peace with God and is sorry about the baby. However when police questioned Shannon he denied any involvement with the shooting.

Police said there has been an ongoing dispute between teens in both houses that stems back to an unsolved homicide in September 2011.

On Monday, George's father said his only son lived with him most of the time and he said he would not have let him go to his maternal grandmother's home if he had known about the feud.

"Put the weapons down," he pled. "Get an education -- learn, become somebody because kids in gangs they only get two choices: Dead or in jail."

Investigators say teens formed a gang in the Camden Avenue home about a year ago and they have ties to the Ferguson family, a notorious part of the Bloods gang in south Minneapolis.

Police said the two teens are still being held in the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center, where one was booked on probable-cause murder and the other for probable-cause weapons charges.

Both teens were picked up at a hotel Brooklyn Center Thursday night, police said.

George was killed Tuesday, and police said tips from the public led to the arrests.

Over the weekend, a community vigil was held for George, and his funeral is set for Tuesday at 11:30 a.m., and will take place at Shiloh Temple International Ministries, located at 1201 West Broadway.
