Woman Arrested In Elderly Purse Theft

Delaware State Police have arrested a Virginia woman in connection to a May purse snatching in New Castle.

The incident happened outside the Super Fresh grocery store on the 2000 block of New Castle Avenue in New Castle as an 85 year old woman was pushing a grocery cart. The suspect, Adrienne Sammons, 29, of Hampton, VA attempted to take the purse of the victim which was inside the shopping cart. The victim held to the purse during the attempt as a struggle ensued. The victim fell to the ground and Sammons was able to flee with the purse.The elderly victim was taken to Christiana Hospital for injuries she sustained in the struggle with Sammons.

Sammons was also involved in another similar theft in Wilmington at the Janssen's Market on the 3800 block of Kennett Pike on May 16th. While fleeing, Sammons was hit by a vehicle on Kennett Pike by a driver and then apprehended by State Police. She suffered minor injuries after being hit by the vehicle.

After further investigation, she matched the description of the incident at the New Castle Ave Super Fresh and a warrant was obtained for her arrest. She was taken into custody by Hampton, VA Police on June 22 and extradited to put into Delaware State Police custody on July 3rd. She is being held at the Delores Baylor Correctional Institution after failing to make $50,000 secured bail.
