Nutter: Won't Let 'A**hole' July 4th Shooter Tarnish City's Image

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Mayor Michael Nutter lashed out Thursday at the 16-year old who police say wounded two other teens with gunfire, then turned a weapon on police, during the city's July 4th "Wawa Welcome America" celebration on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

"I'm not going to let a 16-year old a**hole who's got a beef with somebody from a month ago in Germantown, to negatively impact the image of the city."

Police say the 16-year old and the 17- and 19-year olds he shot, had been involved in a long-simmering dispute in their Germantown neighborhood and had run into each other at last night's concert.  When police approached the teen, they say he turned a weapon on them and was grazed in the chest.

He noted that the crowd of more than half a million people produced just nine arrests- mostly minor- including the aggravated assault charge made against the teen shooter.

"Probably 99% of the folks who were out at the concert on the parkway had no idea this incident had taken place," said the mayor at an afternoon news conference.  "One, because it happened fairly far away and two, because we were very prepared."

None of the shooting injuries was life-threatening, but the city's image- already reeling from rising numbers of murders- suffered another wound.
